Chapter Eleven

Spencer picked Jessica up early on Thursday and they drove to London. The tests were going to be done at a private obstetric clinic in Enfield, bordering on Jubilee Park.

Jessica was very quiet, only nodding and making noncommittal remarks to Spencer, who kept a running conversation going. She realized he was just as nervous as she was, but where she became withdrawn, he tried to draw her out and talk about her fears.

She glanced at him sideways. It really was not fair that a man was that gorgeous. How was any woman supposed to be able to withstand his charms? How would he be able to say no to the constant beautiful, sexy women throwing themselves at him all the time?

If there was one thing Jessica was, it was possessive. She would not tolerate other women near him, should she decide to marry him. And there was no way ... just no way, that he would be able to be a faithful husband.

“I’ve decided we’re staying over in London tonight. I have a penthouse in Belvedere.”

“I did not bring anything with me, Spencer. Besides, I only took today off.”

“It is easy enough to phone the principal and take tomorrow off as well. We’ll buy what you need. So any other excuses?”

“How many other women have stayed over in that penthouse?”

Spencer glanced at her and noticed the scowl she threw at him. His eyebrows rose.

“What does that matter?”

Her frown deepened.

“Avoiding the question will lead to me making my own assumptions and then you can forget about me ever setting even my little toe in that penthouse, never mind stay over.”

“Two.”

One shapely curved eyebrow rose to her hairline when he did not elaborate and he sighed as if resignedly.

“My mother and my sister. And you might as well wipe that look off your face woman! I’ve never taken any woman to any of my homes. Never, and I have always slept in my own bed. I would never expose my kids to ... well you know ...”

“Your loose morals?”

“I’ll have you know I have very high morals. Just because I’ve indulged in seeing to my sexual needs does not make me a—”

“Man whore?”

“You are really asking for trouble, woman!”

“I’m just putting a name to your indulgence, lover boy. Or should we rather say; your overindulgence?”

He speared an annoyed look her way.

“I have had no reason to live the life of a monk, Jessica. I am a man with needs and I saw to them. Clearly you believe I had a different woman in my bed every day.”

“Based on the tabloids it might very well have been.”

“Well it is not. You, more than anyone, should know what crap they spin. Yes, I’ve had sex with many women, but not as often as you might believe. I have a damn demanding job, Jessica. I don’t have the time, nor the energy to jump from one bed to another. My indulgences, more often than not, were months apart.”

They arrived at the clinic and Spencer concentrated on finding parking.
